As the current vice-president of the RMD-MBAA and BOG representative, I am excited to be involved with MBAA and work to improve such a great resource for our local brewing/distilling community. I began my brewing-related career at Odell Brewing in the early 2000s after receiving my BS in Animal Science/Ag from CSU in 2000 (because one rejection from vet school was enough for me to want to do something different), but left the country to serve the US Peace Corps in 2004. While in Bulgaria/Russia, I was a “youth development volunteer” serving to educate young men and women about nutrition and eating disorders. When I returned in 2007, I moved around from my hometown of Chicago to Milwaukee to Seattle. In Seattle, I worked as a line cook/pastry assistant for a couple of restaurants at night, as well as working as an entry-level field-chemist for an environmental consulting firm during the day. I had much more energy in those days. After I returned to Fort Collins in 2011, I found a delightful job with MouCo Cheese Company making some great local cheese. However, my desire to further my education took precedence, so I returned to CSU in 2013/14 to work on my M.S. in Food Science/Food Safety, as well as a different job with Equinox Brewing. This year (2017), I defended my M.S. (on the subject of barley, malt, and beer flavor and flavor stability). I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Horticulture in the same area of cereal science, crop improvements, malt chemistry, and improvement to beer flavor and flavor stability. I like running, death metal, punk, horror films, and drinking.

Katie graduated from Colorado State University in 2011 with a BS in Environmental Health. After graduation, she interned in the cellar at Fort Collins Brewery before taking a position in the QA/QC lab at Oskar Blues Brewery in Longmont, CO. From that initial part-time lab tech position, she worked up to full-time and then eventually moved into the role of lab manager. She was at Oskar Blues until 2016 when she then accepted a job back at her alma matter of CSU as the lab manager for the Fermentation Science and Technology program. She is still currently in that role helping build and grow the program to one of the best in the country. She creates and performs research opportunities, mentors the future brewers and fermenters of America, and runs a growing service lab for the fermentation industry. She loves learning about all aspects of fermentation and is an avid home fermenter herself. When she’s not in her lab or kitchen growing up some new culinary pet experiment, you’ll find her backpacking, trail running, snowboarding, and biking in the mountains, sharing beers with friends, or dancing to live music. She’s been part of the Rocky Mountain District board since 2014 and is looking forward to her new position as president. Her main goal is to continuing making Rocky Mountain the best district by providing the a space in which the brewing industry may network, learn, and build community.
